San Vicente de la Sonsierra, March 2014. – Viñedos and Bodegas Sierra Cantabria invites visitors at the Prowein 2014 trade fair to travel to its terroirs in DOCa Rioja and DO Toro through its tempranillo collection that clearly reflects the philosophy of this Riojan winemaking family: excellence in caring for the vineyard and the utmost respect for the fruit in the winery, which allows them to create wines of the greatest purity and identification with the terroir.

The wines of Marcos and Miguel Eguren that will be present at Prowein have been praised by national and international critics, and placed on the honour rolls of Spanish wine guides like ‘Proensa’, ‘Peñín’ and ‘Gourmets’ and in highly influential international publications like ‘Wine Spectator’ and ‘The Wine Advocate’. The Rioja reds ‘Amancio 2010’ and ‘La Nieta 2011’ will be among those wines available for tasting at the stand (Hall 04 B23). Both of these wines received 100 points from ‘Guía Proensa’. ‘Amancio’ also boasts the title of ‘Best Red of the Year’, awarded by ‘Guía Vivir el Vino’; while ‘La Nieta’ is now part of the ‘Liga del 99’, as it received the highest rating possible from ‘Guía Gourmets’ – 99 points.

A family history rooted in Sonsierra

The story of this winegrowing family goes back to 1870, when Amancio, the great-grandfather of the current Eguren winemakers, pioneered this project. Marcos and Miguel Eguren, now in charge of winemaking and management respectively, represent the fourth generation of winemakers in this family. Their father, Guillermo, began bottling his production under the brand Sierra Cantabria in 1957.

Following an initial phase when the family focused on young wines, remaining faithful to the carbonic maceration of Sonsierra, Marcos Eguren played an important role in setting the stage for a revolution in Rioja wine. Encouraged by his brother Miguel, Marcos trail blazed the way for single vineyard wines that respect a terroir´s singularity with the goal of extracting its maximum character and identity.

It is on this premise that, for over 20 years, Marcos and Miguel Eguren have built their collection of DOCa Rioja wines at their wineries Señorío de San Vicente, Viñedos Sierra Cantabria and Viñedos de Páganos, thus completing and expanding on their original contribution of ‘Sierra Cantabria’. ‘La Nieta’, ‘Finca El Bosque’, ‘Amancio’ and ‘Alabaster’ constitute their high-end collection, with fewer than 5,000 bottles artisanally crafted, with manual stemming and foot pressing.

New horizons for DO Toro

The oenological mark of Marcos Eguren, reinforced by his brother Miguel´s business vision, has helped chart the path towards DO Toro for over 15 years, initially with the winery Numanthia Termes, which was sold to Louis Vuitton Möett Hennessy in 2008, and currently with Teso La Monja winery, selected as ‘Best Winery of the Year’ by ‘Guía Peñín 2013’.

‘Romanico’, ‘Almirez’, ‘Victorino’ and ‘Alabaster’ – the latter an artisanal concept – are the wines of reference for this winegrowing family in Toro lands, in addition to the family´s most exclusive wine, ‘Teso La Monja’. Just 800 bottles of Teso La Monja are produced annually. Named after its birthplace, this wine is conceived and crafted with biodynamic practices; it is the only red wine in the world to ferment in an oval tank of French oak – an innovation by Taransaud – which promotes the wine´s biorhythms.
