The 2018 Guía de Vinos Gourmets (Gourmet Wine Guide) has recognised the work of Marcos Eguren with its “Special Prize”, and again selected Teso La Monja 2012 to form part of the “League of 99”
The Guía de Vinos Gourmets wine guide, in order to recognise the work of professionals in the Spanish wine sector, once again organised the awards ceremony during the celebration of the Salón Gourmets fair, as part of an effort to acknowledge the excellence, careers and innovative ideas that are revolutionising the sector.
This award ceremony was held on May 8 in Madrid, where once again the Eguren family, of Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria, was honoured. At this 33rd edition the men tapped to pick up the accolade were Miguel Ángel Eguren and Marcos Eguren.
Marcos Eguren’s oenological work has been acknowledged by the 2018 Gourmet Wine Guide with its “Special Prize“, as all his wines feature singularities that make them special. Internationally renowned as one of the most prestigious winemakers, his spectacular resume has garnered him countless awards.
“Teso La Monja 2012” was honoured once again, forming part of the “League of 99″ for yet another year. It is a wine that has become an oenological leader, chosen for its special characteristics. Awarded 99 points, it is the second time it has qualified for this select club, after Teso La Monja 2009 was chosen three years ago.
With an exclusive production limited to just 869 bottles, Teso La Monja is a monovarietal Tinta de Toro wine springing from a 130 year old vineyard.
This marking the fifth vintage on the market, Marcos and Miguel Ángel Eguren face the challenge of continuing to write the history of the Toro D.O. with this exclusive, unique and unrepeatable wine. “Teso La Monja 2012” represents an invitation to enjoy the magic of the Tinta de Toro grape and the vineyard’s intimate connection with its surroundings, in a wine crafted to become a viticultural legend, and whose memory will transcend generations, enduring over time. In the words of the Gourmet Wine Guide: “it is a Toro wine endowed with great finesse. Thrilling.”
Five generations of winemakers, their roots running deep in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, have woven a saga of complicity between man and vineyard, drawing out all the potential of a unique variety, Tempranillo, going to every length necessary to transmit its expressiveness through a set of exceptional wines of the highest purity and identification with the terroir.
Marcos Eguren, heading up the oenological work, and Miguel Eguren, in management, oversee a project dedicated to a quest for wines that evoke the vineyard, of great versatility and pronounced personality. Guillermo, the father of the current generation holding the wine group’s reins, considers himself, above all, a collector of vineyards. And his sons have understood this role, with their philosophy firmly grounded in excellent care for the vineyard and the utmost respect for the winery’s fruit, to produce wines constituting new classics. Wines that endure over time, combining fruit, strength and structure with elegance, freshness and subtlety.
