Cited as one of the best Riojas in the ranking was Sierra Cantabria Reserva 2010, with 93 points.

This wine by the Eguren family, from Sierra Cantabria, stands out for its “freshness and elegance, with character. It features an expression of red fruit, perceptible but ripe tannins, good acidity, structure and expressivity,” according to Marcos Eguren.

Sierra Cantabria: the essence of the family

Sierra Cantabria is the winery in which the family’s wine-growing principles first took root. Founded by Guillermo Eguren in 1957, the Sierra Cantabria winery is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a Rioja town boasting a great wine tradition and enjoying a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range.

Sierra Cantabria is their mother winery, reflecting the family’s evolution from grape growers to full-fledged winemakers thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of Guillermo Eguren, who, without losing his farming roots, wished to capture all the qualities of the area’s unique soil in a collection of wines.

The Eguren family’s wine-growing project

Five generations of winemakers, with their roots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, have woven a saga of complicity between man and vineyard, drawing out all the potential of a unique variety, Tempranillo, going to every length necessary to transmit its expressiveness through a set of exceptional wines of the highest purity and connection with the terroir.

Marcos-Eduardo-Miguel-Familia EgurenMarcos Eguren, heading up the oenological work, with the help of his son Eduardo, and Miguel Eguren in management, lead a project dedicated to a quest for wines that evoke the vineyard, of a great versatility and marked personality. Guillermo, the father of the current generation holding the wine group’s reins, considers himself, above all, a collector of vineyards. And his sons have understood this role, with their philosophy firmly rooted in excellent care for the vineyard and the utmost respect for the winery’s fruit, to produce wines constituting new classics. Wines that endure over time, combining fruit, strength and structure with elegance, freshness and subtlety.

The wide range of quality wines from the Eguren family includes more than 20 labels on the market, from its six wineries: Sierra Cantabria, Viñedos Sierra Cantabria, Señorío de San Vicente, and Viñedos de Páganos, in the Rioja DOCa; Teso La Monja, in the Toro DO; and Dominio de Eguren, in that of Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla.
